Hi

I've just bought a 540i and I think the speakers are goosed. (Very crackly and generally sh*T sounding. I've been told that they are usually quite good in BMWs.)

My question is: What sound systems have others fitted and what is the ballpark figure for a reasonable sounding system? I'm thinking that £500 shoud get me something ok? (Apologies to non-brits) Pioneer/Kenwood/Blaupunkt? [driving2]
Also, if there is anyone out there who is form the Sheffield/Leeds area could you give me a clue as to a good car audio supplier/fitting service as I've just moved to the area.

MB Qaurt speakers, German....just like your car. For real though, MB's will last the rest of your cars life. You can definetly find a deal online, make sure its an authorized dealer though, with warrenty...just in case. Your budget should suit you fine. I am not familiar with prices in Europe though, so I don't know what stuff costs over there in-store.

Will you install it yourself? I can help if you need it. Also, what year is your car? And were the speakers all you were looking to replace?

Hi and thanks for taking the time to write.

We pay through the nose for everything over here. It's really sickening having the net sometimes because we can see the prices in the states and elsewhere and KNOW that we are being shafted! At least before cyberspace we could pretend that's what everone had to pay.

I had a quick look and found a supplier of the MB Quart speakers but didn't have time to check out reviews/prices etc but thanks for the tip.
I wasn't thinking of fitting it (time) but someone has just sent me an email quote to fit head/changer and speakers (Phoenix Gold speakers - heard of them?) and the whole price came to over 700 quid. But the thing is £240 of that was fitting! So I may consider doing it myself now.

Thanks again

Trust me, you can do it yourself. Why don't you just buy over the net? Shipping sucks, but in the end you still will save.

Pheonix Gold is ok, but personally I wouldn't buy it. Mb Quart is worth the extra money, believe me. I have used it in the past, and would buy it again if I had money to spend on car audio, but I have to save for college right now :(.

I'll look up speaker sizes for your car, and then look on the net for a good deal. Then you can go compare, or even print the sites pages out, go to your store and bitch out the salesman, sometimes it works and they'll kick the price down a little. Worth a shot. They see you drive a nice car, and figure you have the money to spend. Make it obvious you are looking to get a good bang for the buck and not get ripped, it might help.

Dynaudio are impressive - very expensive. MB quart QSDs are great but need alot of power (new amps??) - they are a bit expensive, even in the states. I have Focal polykevlars (K series) in my 996 cab and they sound great - top up or down. You can get Focal's for about 2/3's the MB quart price (QSDs) and they will sound better with less power.

Have not heard too many good things on Phoenix Gold speakers - their Titanium series amps are very good (I have 2 in my 996 and a 3rd going into the X5). Personally - I am not impressed with the porsche or BWM audio. I have completely changed the system in my 996 and changing the amp/speakers in the X5 4.6 (using Focal's again). Hope the process is easier on the X5 - the 996 was tricky

Thanks for the posts, guys. I'm still looking at the options and those Focals look well expensive. I find it hard to accept that the manufacturers can be creating or finding markets for so much 'new' stuff!!

I need to find somewhere in England where I can hear these things but so far on the net I haven't even found a real good review site. Anyone got any addresses?

I bought a Sony cdx 848x changer for £90 which seems cheap enough - the nearest I found new was £190 upwards so that's ok. Just got to find a decent head unit to go for but the choices are a bit bewildering if you start looking round second user stuff. New around £100 - 200 seem ok and play MP3 but is it simply "you get what you pay for" or are there genuine bargains to be had second hand?

I want a sub too but don't really want to go to the expense and trouble (not to mention the space) of fitting an amp so another question: are there subs that fit under seats and how big are subs in general. I.e. where do you have to fit them?

Cheers

Andy

subs get VERY warm, and you need an amp to drive it, which will also get very hot at times. therefore, a closed and small area that isnt well ventilated it very bad. you can do this though, if you modify the seat to allow good air circulation, and it doesnt affect the sound waves and air pressure too much to end up like a bandpass box (bandpass produces terrible soud quality).

I suggest you put a sub in the trunk. well ventilated, large enough to occomidate an amp + sub. amps are usually 2-3 inches thick, and 18 inches either way by 20-30 inches wither way. subs usually need at least one cubic foot of space, but the shape and design can vary to anything you want. even fiberglass a custom fit box and paint it like your trunk or car color, so it looks stock/apart of the car.

again, i suggest you look at buying from the USA, and having it shipped to england. you might save some money. look at low end Alpine for good quality, and price.

http://www.cbrstereo.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=20 - $169 US, about 212 euro. i am not sure what currency you use, i think thats the euro symbol? or does england have its own currency? shipping would suck a$$, but you still might save in the end.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!! if you buy a cheao deck, it will last only a while, and sound terrible. this applies to any car audio equipment.

there are groups of companies that do things to soley make money, like sony. then there are the goups of companies that have a passion for what they do. in car audio, these companies are: Alpine, Arc Audio, Resonant Engineering, Orion, Image Dynamics, Dynaudio, Focal, JL Audio, TRU Technology, Adire, and sadly only a few others. If you want stuff that lasts, that can take EXTREME AMOUNTS of abuse and power, plays amazing clarity, looks good, and the company that makes the product will provide excelent CS, then you WILL pay for it. Because it costs a lot of money to make this stuff that good will all of those features and more. If you are looking only for a few things in that list, then look at RF, JVC, Panasonic, Phoenix Gold, and basically the rest of the companies out there. You cannot and will not get the quality out of a product that is made to make corporate nerds rich, as you will with people like you and me that really have a passion for car audio, and how good we can make it sound. its a hobby to most of these companies, not really a job. they make enough money to keep up like everyone else does with any other proffession, but no more.

maybe that will help you decide what to buy.
