Latest BMW 3 Series is the most successful model in the company's history
The 3 millionth BMW 3 Series rolled off the assembly line at BMW’s Regensburg plant today – six years after the production launch of this version in 1998. This M3 Convertible signals a very special achievement: never before has BMW produced so many cars of a single model series. “The unique success of the BMW 3 Series lies in its dynamic attributes as well as in the wide range of variants and numerous individual specifications,” says Dr Norbert Reithofer, Member of the Board of Management at BMW AG, responsible for production. BMW produces automobiles in accordance with specific customer orders. From the 3 million BMW 3 Series nearly no single model is similar to another one.
The BMW 3 Series is manufactured within a flexible production network of up to five BMW plants based in Munich, Regensburg, Dingolfing, Rosslyn (South Africa) and Shenyang (China). In addition, BMW assembles the 3 Series and other models in so-called CKD (Completely Knocked Down) plants, primarily located in Asia, where the cars are completed using locally manufactured parts. This avoids high import duties and allows for market entry at competitive prices.
