Any one have any information about the availability of the SMG transmission on the new Z4 M Coupe coming out later this year? I've been told by dealers that it "should" be available, but no one can give me a definite yes. I'm on a list for one with an expected build date in May but I am still looking for confirmation on this available transmission. There's quite a bit of information about the vehicle, just no word on the options as of yet.

I've heard it a few times that they aren't going to be putting the SMG trans in the Z4 anymore, whether or not it happens this year I don't know.

No idea for sure, but I would put my money down that the car will be available with the SMG transmission. Too many people in the US just do not want to drive a real manual.

We discussed this a few months ago :(http://www.hotbimmer.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19245)

BMW is dropping sequential manual transmissions in favour of dual clutch transmissions, also called direct shift gearbox (DSG) transmissions.

A sequential manual gearbox will not be offered on the facelifted Z4 or the new M Roadster, according to the German publication, Automobilwoche.

The M Roadster will get a six speed manual gearbox instead.

Automobilwoche said that Getrag is developing a dual clutch transmission for BMW and that ZF is working on a similar development for an unnamed German OEM.

Dual clutch gearboxes made by BorgWarner are already widely available across Volkswagen group model lines.
