Don't be so hard on BMW, sometimes change is good
Hehe, well... not the way they are going though. The one thing that has ALWAYS attracted me to German cars (minus volkswagen) is their sleek, muscular, and very classy looks. BMW is just making their cars rediculiously huge now with systems so complex... that it's almost TOO much. I'll be switching to audi, merc, or porsche (if the the funds are there after college [;)])

I'm on pins and needles over here waiting to see the new 3. I pray vanHooydonk can pull it together. I want another 3 so bad!! Hold in there epj3, I think they realize they've really messed up and are planning something sensible for their largest selling car. Let's wait and see.

I don't have much hope for bmw anymore. The company will realize when their sales plummit that they shouldn't have tried to follow japanese cars. I'm keeping my car becuase it's a true bmw. Anyone with an e46 or older should be happy to own what they do, because they'll never be the same.

Yeah i agree that the new styling direction at BMW is questionable. I'm annoyed that i look at a 6-series and can't make up my mind whether or not i like the styling. I look at an Aston Martin Vanquish and think OH MY GOD that is a truly beautiful motorcar. I'm also quite pissed off that BMW have moved away from the aggressive looking cars such as the E34 5 series and even the prominent snout of the E23 7-series. What is going on? I know BMW have to show that they're progressive and all that stuff but c'mon, the 7-series? Its an absolute travesty that such a beautiful engine is wasted in such an ugly car. BMW need to get back to their driver-centric past with the tilted dash, do away with the crappy 'technology' for the driving experience and instead concentrate on engine and chassis technology. Who cares if they lose sales to computer geeks?? One last thing. Why in God's name is the new M5 only offered with an SMG tranny?? This is a serious dissappointment to me and every driving enthusiast knows that it's more rewarding to swap the cogs yourself!!

That's my two cents on the matter.

I like most of the new designs and change is not always bad.
You don't appreciate what BMW is all about. I wish you lived closer to me, I'd let you drive my car, and you'd see what everyone is talking about. Your car is probably very very nice -- and the new 3's are... but it's a 325i all wheel drive... doesn't have quite the same feel as other bmw's.

The majority of people like bmw becuase of their subtle but masculine features.

If they follow this years trends, BMW sales will not plummit....they will increase by at least 50% with the introduction of new body styles. Look at Metallica of yore......had a great fan base prior to the Black album.....we all said they sold out and lost their original fan base but with the Black album 200x's more people started listening to them after that. This is no different...we as this generation don't want to see change..the next Newbie" generation will be completely different and I feel that irregardless of what we think....the NAME BMW will carry it through all of these radical changes and BMW will continue to kick ass and take names. It's different though. there aren't many people who will buy a shitty metalica album becuase of who made it. There are a lot of people who will buy a new 5 or 7 just because of what's on the steering wheel.

Yeah you are damn right. Thats the most depressing part of this whole Bangle thing. So many people will buy the new BMWs simply because of the roundel on the bonnet and many won't give a shit about the wonderful driver-oriented past of the company. Cars like the E30 3-series, 3.0l csl, E34 M5 etc won't be repeated or matched by the latter day models and i believe that this all stems from one root problem. Bangle. His design philosophy seems to have filtered through to the core driving dynamics of the new BM's so that now we have this terrible i-Drive system and the concave dashboard. Its all about the company telling the consumer what they think is the right path to go, not the other way round. But, BMW fanatics such as us see through that and we deplore an M5 with only an SMG option am i correct?

Its all so depressing. I will never get rid of my E30 now!

Some do, but I purchased my car because the way it feels to drive and because it's such a wonderful machine. If you really think about it, the best place to be in a Beemer is behind the steering wheel. Who care what it looks like from the outside?

If your a real Beemer fan you appreciate how incredible the car drives and how the car feels behind the wheel. If you buy it for the way it looks, you should go elsewhere and buy a lesser , car. I mean maybe I am wrong, but I have never placed BMW designs as the most beautiful.

Yeah abdoman i see your point but i'm saying that the recent design 'changes' have also filtered into the driving experience of the modern BMW. As an example, you can't honestly tell me that active steering makes the steering of a 5 series more communicative or feelsome. Sure, it'll give you greater stability at higher speeds but if its the 'ultimate driving machine' then perhaps more skilled drivers appreciate the challenge more. I challenge anyone here to honestly tell me that the steering of the new 5-series is more feelsome or direct than the simple rack-and-pinion setup in the E30 3 or the E34 M5.

The Bangle era, i believe, has not only ruined the styling but has also had negative effects on the driving experience too. This is the real travesty. BMW created a reputation of building masculine-looking cars with (relatively) uncompromising driver focus. This formula seems to me to have been diluted recently.

What's wrong with buying a car based on its looks? If i didn't like the looks of my car, I probably wouldn't have bought it. Of course, the looks of the e30's had to grow on me for me to like it, but still...

I like how bmw's don't have a very strong 'look at me' presence.. but they can outperform those cars that DO.
