Hey Everyone,

I am toying with the idea of getting a 2005 M3. I know it is the last year for the body style, but I don't think the new M3 will be out for at least a year, right? I'm also not sure that the new one will be as pure and perfected as the E46 M3.

I am looking at an 05 Competition Pkg, although I don't think the extra 4k is worth it. I think I am more into a "regular" one.

Doesn't the Alcantra on the steering wheel soil immediatley and look crappy? And aren't the rims that come on the competition pkg after markety looking???

Any advice on the 05 M3s and when the NEW one is coming out is appreciated.

P.S.

If it does not stop raining here in Los Angeles ,,,,,I'm going to be on ocean front property soon [ohcrap]

First off, you have one hell of a selection of automobiles...a 325, a 4.8 X5, and a Alpina Z8. That's one hell of a garage!

I am not a car guru like some people here but I think the M3 is one of the best sports cars made, esp for the money. Granted, I may be a little partial since I have one, but I am excited to drive every time I step into her. I have a 04 E46 M3 with 19s and HK sound system, etc, and love it too death. Plus, I think the competition package sharpens the drivers egde but I do think the rims have a little after market look to them. Also, you lose the wheel controls with the competition package.

By the way, what colors did you choose in the X5?

Good luck with the decision and keep us informed!

Yeah, I dislike how you lose the steering wheel controls on the M3 Competition Package. But there are a LOT of cons to this package. I think the 19" BBS wheels and cross-drilled rotors look great! The wheels are perfect for the car, no need to change them. Even the thicker sport steering wheel and quicker steering ratio should make even more fun to drive through the twisties. The "Track Mode" button is really cool too...push it and the ABS, traction control, etc. are all watered down to give you some more "room to play" but they are all still there in case things get out of control.

I think you should definitely go for the E46 M3 since it is such an amazing car. You still have like a year or two before the next-generation M3 comes out. But the only downside is that you are getting the end of an older generation of cars, when all the other car companies have their all-new sports cars (Audi S4, MB C55, Cadillac CTS-V, etc.).

According to the BMW website, the Alcantara steering wheel is "Not available with cruise or multi-function steering wheel controls." I know that the steering wheel radio controls aren't available with the Competition Package, but does this also mean that none of the Competition Package cars have cruise control?????

Thanks for all the advice, help. I did not know that there are no steering wheel controls with the Comp. Pkg. Why??? I use those everyday in the Wagon and X5...LOVE wheel mounted controls.

The X5 is Sapphire Black with Black Nappa Leather. That is one hell of a car....brings a smile every time I start her up :)

Not me, I would love to have the competition package wheels (classic BBS) on my M3. I think they are very sweet wheels. I want a set...

P.S. I am not a fan of the Alcantra steering wheel. I like the leather so much more....

The use of Alcantara on the steering wheel is to give you a better grip of the wheel.
The Competition Package is just more performance. And for more performance, you sometimes have to eliminate luxury. It is definitely a tough call, but if I were getting an M3, I'd go Competition Package all the way. As BMW says in their adds, "It's 110% M3" [bmwdance]

yea i love that interlago blue. almost as much as imola red. w/ the competition package, you might lose all the steering wheel controls, (still wondering why..) it looks weird w/ just one btn on that wheel.. but you get beefier brakes, nicer looking 19s. the only for CP color: Interlago blue, among other things.

just as many thought 4 grand for zhp package was worth it/not worth it, i'm sure the debate would be the same for the competition package. but if you want the closest thing to CSL this side of the pond, w/out losing AC or having a cardboard for a trunk floor, CP seems like a hell of a deal. 60k.. man o man.

e46 m3 has got to be my fav looking m. i know that e90 m3, when it does come out will set a new bar, but i think i'd choose the e46 over the e90. (fer now anyway) but when the 400hp v8 (speculation) under the bonnet, m3 comes out, she'd be hard to resist, even w/ the e46 m3 near by.

I love my Topaz Blue Metallic Blue, but I must say the new Interlogos Blue is out-of-this-world. I may have to look into a trade-in, but I am worried my wife would kill me. I love the new M3 Comp. package... I want one....

Okay...It's looking like I might be getting the 2005 M3 with Comp. Pkg.. I am getting a little cold feet, since I have never seen Interlagos Blue in Person, nor have I seen the Gray Nappa Leather with that special Comp. PKg aluminium interior trimming.

So excited, but so frickin' nervous. Am I doing the right thing? An M3...who would have thought? As you can see I am freaking out a little.....

Anyone seen the colour (s) in person. No offense to anyone who has Mystic Blue, I really like it, but at the same time find it a little brash & cheeky :) Is Interlagos blue cheekier??? [eek]

Dude if you have doubts, then you definitely shouldn't be buying the car. We can't tell if you're doing the right thing or not because this is a personal decision. What I CAN tell you is that the car you want to get should "feel" like the right decision...you shouldn't be nervous or have second thoughts about it.

Thanks and to Frolf too. I have Always!! loved the M3, but was just wondering about the colour. I like most shades of blue a lot, but just have not seen Interlagos in person, and cannot find a local dealer who has one.

I know I will love the car, but I think a lot of people are nervous when buying a car, especially so $$$ :-o I hope I like the colour, interior, alcantara steering wheel and especially SMG. I had a car with SMG for a loaner for almost 3 weeks, and by the end I was really into it. I guess just most concerned about the Alcantara steering wheel, but I guess that is such a small issue if the rest of the car is amazing!!!

I am leaving in the morning for a very, long drive to go and get it. Excited, scared, nervous, amazed.....

If it is definitely what you want, then you should get it. It is okay to be nervous about it, but you shouldn't be nervous about the decision itself to buy a new car. Do you know what I mean?

Either way, you certainly do want this car and I don't think you are in over your head. Definitely go for it and definitely get the color that you like best. Personally, I am not a fan of the Interlagos Blue because on the bmwusa web site it looks purple and well...I'm not a girl. But if it looks REAL hot in person and you definitely like it, then GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [headbang]

Don't forget to take an assload of pictures for us !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am ordering my M3 today, I drove the M3 Interlagos Blue Comp package yesterday and I admit at first glance it was the hottest color ever but then after parking it in the light and taking a second look I decided the color wasn't for me. I agree in the pictures it's the hottest color ever but in person the color looks bright purple to me and that's not what I'm going for. If you don't mind purple you will love the color.
