Hoping someone with good knowledge of this engine can help me and people don't mind me posting on here as I have a Vauxhall Omega, but with the 2.5TD BMW engine - it's a 1999.

Basically, I have an annoying ticking / tapping noise on tick-over. It varies on how loud this is but can usually be heard from cold and then seems to fade a little before getting to it's worst when the engine is fully warm. The noise is present on tick-over and rises up to approx. 2000 RPM before either dissappearing or being drawn out by the noise of the engine as revs build (not sure which, only that it can't be heard above this). Also, some times when the engine is revved and then allowed to return to idle, as the revs return to tickover they dip very slightly below which causes the tapping / ticking to be even worse!

It sounds very similar to a warn tappet / cam follower. So I had these all replaced for brand new items only to find it made no difference. I've also just had a new clutch & dual mass flywheel (as I was having problems with these). Was hoping this may have helped the noise too but to no avail.

Can someone shed any light on this? Does this engine usually sound like this? I've read loads (on various forums) about water pump failure on this engine, could it be this beginning to give up?

Someone please help - it's driving me mad especially as the engine sounds fine underload / higher revs - actually quite nice for a diesel!

I don't know a damn thing about BMW's diesel engines, but I'll have to assume the valves are actuated by hydraulic lifters. Higher RPM's would mean higher oil pressure and probalby quieter. But I have a feeling you're simply hearing the injectors. The injectors on a diesel engine are very high pressure and nearly ALL injectors make noise, especially the stronger ones on a diesel.

Don't take my word for it though (at all... just take it into consideration or do more research)
