I have a 5er but I have considered trading down to the 1er....esp. the 130i M-Sport......more my size.....(can I say trading down when it comes to BMW to BMW???)
um...on the trading down, i wouldn't call trading down but a change in style, as series is a different style. My dad once told me that once you have a 5 you can't go down (his 3 drove him nuts just on the less size) but i dunno. I really like this car and can't wait til 08 when its supposed to hit teh states (well at least 1 series) i think.

I'd have to agree even after driving a large rental car for a month, I found my 330 to be somewhat small almost to a point where it became bothersome. So I took a drive in a 99' corolla for a few hours. Afterwards the BMW felt like a solid, safe, well-built compact sports car.... and I was more than able to live with that.

The small BMW's are just what they are, SMALL but if you want a small car with world class handling that lets you forget its size while you're on the road then it's the car to get. That's true for the 3 series, I'm not sure about the 1er..

I will say that after a trip to dealer spending time in both the 3er and 5er I would prefer the new 5 series to the new 3 series.

My dad got a 3 and misses having a 5. I've got his old 5 and would rather have a 3. I wish he'd trade... A '98 328i for a '92 525i seems like a fair deal to me.
Well I agree maybe it's a maturity issue, the bigger car is simply more comfortable and professional. The small car is more personal, single, and sporty I'm sure plenty people can relate to this. The rules do bend depending on the vehicles use, for instance if I were commuting 100 miles a day I would probably get a civic.

E46 330 too small? Pansies, why dont you go buy an suv or something, or is that too small.
like Emile would say, its a "tight car", But the E46 is kinda small, i feel cramped in it. I like room ( prolly because I have 2 suv's... ) I wouldnt go smaller than a 5.

I definitely agree with that Remark....but not just any 3....a M3!!!!!!
Or (M1..or 130i w/M-Techniks)
If it weren't for maintainence I would buy an M3.

Honestly, I'm bored with BMW's. I've been looking at audi's but they aren't as well built as bmw's. Sigh....

It's a tight and classy car; which is what I like about it. I do agree that it's a little cramped coming from something bigger but you do get used to it. But, if I were in the market for another car I'd definately get the 5 over the new 3. On that note I agree the 5 is the perfectly balanced car, anything smaller is well "a little" small.

Well to be honest I would like a car the size of the 3series or the 1series.....the 130i would be perfect for me as I am only 5' 8" and weigh about 150...155 on thanksgiving![thumb]
I was going to look for a 3er but then I saw my 5er......but I still wish I had a smaller car at times........in the same color with the M-sport package.....LOL

Maybe it's a euro thing, considering almost everyone has a big car (SUV) in the U.S. which makes it the norm, while in Germany subcompacts and other such small cars are the norm. I remember telling a friend in Germany about my purchase of a small car (BMW 3 series), after clarifying the specific model he called it a decent sized car with too much horsepower (231PS) Seems like the average german prefers a small underpowered car, almost redundant considering their latest Audi S's and Mercedes AMG's and even BMW M's, which must all be inspired for the U.S. market...

The problem is that when you have a big car, you get used to that big size and the way it feels and drives. If you've been driving a big car for a long time and then suddenly switch to something smaller, it will feel much smaller than it actually is. For example, my dad is like 5'6" and my mom is about 5'3" or so and both of them will never drive anything smaller than their S500's....weird shit.

The 130i's size will be fine for anyone. If you don't fit in a 130, the car isn't too small, you're just too full of yourself.

Eric and I are cool because we both know that smaller = better.

In all seriousness, the interior of the E90 is almost the same as my E34, and my e34 is ****ing HUGE. I'm not a small guy and even I have more room than I'd ever need.
