I just ran into my neighbors. Both are BMW salesmen and they had just gotten back from Dallas for training on the new 1 series. They said the 1 series will be the 128 and 135 and although pricing is not set, they think it will start in the mid 20s.

Wow, great news. When I first heard about BMW bringing the 1 to the States, I was a little worried that it might dilute the brand. But honestly, after seeing them in Europe, I realized those are really quality little cars and I'm glad they're bringing them here. Hell, if they had come here sooner, maybe I would've bought one!!

I think there's definitely a growing market for 3 and 5 door hatches in the US. I'm seeing plenty of A3s around Chicagoland here, and a lot of new Rabbits. I think BMW is doing the smart thing by bringing the 1 over and getting into the hatch market.

Abdoman,

Do you when the 1s are supposed to go on sale? I'm guessing this Fall?? Also, by the badge designations, are they going to have the same 3.0L and 3.5L engines as the 3 series?? Those seem mighty powerful for a relatively small car.

The guys said it was a coupe, not a hatchback. Here's a link with pics.

Oh, thanks for the link. I didn't even know about a 1 series coupe. It looks cool though.

Too bad about the BMW hatchbacks though. I really think there's a market for them in the States. I guess the Mini kind of covers that base for BMW, but I'd like to see a more premium 3 and 5 door here. I think it could be a great way to get younger buyers into the brand earlier. Like I said before, I've seen quite a few A3s and a lot of Rabbits around these parts, though there's a larger than average European demographic in Chicago than most other parts of the country, and I know Europeans are a lot more willing to buy/drive hatchbacks and wagons than most Americans, so I don't know....

I read on Edmunds that GM will begin selling the Opel Asta under the Saturn badge in the fall. My rental when I was in Europe was an Astra and I can't tell you how much fun it was to drive, especially on some of those curvy Meditarrean roads. And it was only a 1.6 or 1.8L. The Saturn Astra will have the 1.8.

I agree that hatchbacks were really cool!!!Since the new 7 series had been unveiled, BMW began to redesign their entire line of cars. It appears that BMW is pursuing a design promoting greater unification across their line. Now apparent through the new 5 series, which some might argue to be a toned down version of the 7 series and the late to be released 6 series, the new design follows a very unique classy trend. But I am looking forward for the release of their BMW 2 Series, although I am more interested with thei parts. I always stay tuned on any bmw sites for a full release of the new BMW 1 Series...
