You can buy special LED Bulbs. There are ones very high quality made in USA. There are many different kinds but this ones have LED's also facing to the side of the bulb which reflects from the inside reflector of the tail light making it brighter. The regular LED bulbs will just light up as a small circle. Here I will attache some pictures so you can see. Will also link the web site.
The price is aroud $49 per one bulb.

The stock LED bulbs from the 04 coupes won't fit the sedans. Don't bother. You're gonna have to wait until BMW produces LEDs for the sedans.
As for coupes, people who have been trying complain of the light flickering. One person claims to have done it (at a cost of $1000 for the stock parts) but I stopped following to see if he updated his story to let us know if there were any problems like the others had. Supposedly it works better on the newer build date cars (around 2002 or so).
